Arinze Onuaku welcomes supporting role as long as Meralco locals keep stepping up

MERALCO may be currently sitting at fourth in the standings with its 6-2 record, but there’s no doubt in Arinze Onuaku that his team can still make a run for one of the top two spots that come with a twice-to-beat advantage in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup playoffs.

“We’re definitely confident,” he said on the heels of the Bolts’ huge 102-75 win over Blackwater on Friday to clinch its seat in the quarterfinals.

Onuaku has every reason to feel optimistic seeing how dominant his team played against the Elite even when he only played for 28 minutes.

The 30-year-old normed his usual numbers of 17 points and 16 rebounds, along with two assists, two blocks, and a steal, but this time, the locals were the ones to step up to the plate as Meralco got solid games from Cliff Hodge, Jared Dillinger, and Anjo Caram.

With his teammates clicking, Onuaku has no qualms playing the supporting role.

“I think everything starts with me here. But that’s my job, to set my teammates up and that’s the same approach I take every game,” he said. “You got a talented group and we’ve been working really hard.”

That’s why even with the Bolts facing a grinder of a schedule for their final three games, with league leaders Alaska, TNT, and Rain or Shine up next, Onuaku thinks that his squad can hurdle the challenge.

“We control our own destiny. All the teams ahead of us we play so it’s a good thing. We got three more games so we’ll try to win them to get a better position for the playoffs,” he said.
