Austria confirms Murphy arrival as AZ Reid deals with ankle injury

SAN Miguel coach Leo Austria has confirmed Kevin Murphy is set to arrive in Manila on Thursday to join the Beermen replacing the injured AZ Reid.

Austria said Reid has been suffering from an ankle injury, prompting the Beermen to bring in the former Utah Jazz player Murphy for the PBA Governors Cup.

“Nagli-limp siya (Reid),” said Austria, who showed up at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum to scout games on Wednesday. “Just in case na something wrong na mangyari sa amin, meron kami (import).”

Austria said Murphy will arrive on Thursday morning and could join San Miguel’s practice immediately.

“He will practice tomorrow kung makakarating siya on time. I think around 6:30 in the morning siya darating. May mga proseso pa, titignan. Pag-practice, titignan namin kung deserving siya,” said Austria.

The Beermen are currently on a roller-coaster ride as they hold a 2-2 win-loss slate. They lost to Barangay Ginebra, 110-102, on Sunday.

Austria said, at this point, Reid remains as San Miguel’s import until the coaching staff sees Murphy in practice.

“Wala pa naman siya dito. Hindi pa nakakarating. Once na nakita na namin, puwede na namin sabihin na siya na. Based on what we’ve seen sa videos, he is okay,” said Austria.

Austria said Reid has been bothered by an ankle sprain he suffered during their game against Columbian last week.

“Dalawang beses siya na-sprain. Last game natapilok siya. Pero AZ is always in practice. Kaya lang, di pa niya maitakbo kasi may tenderness sa ankle niya. Ayaw namin ma-aggravate.

“I told him you are still my import. Keep on working. Magpa-kundisyon ka muna,” said Austria.
