Austria hardly worried about prized rookie Standhardinger after so-so debut

LEO Austria admitted San Miguel is still far from game shape in a shock 93-85 loss to Meralco in its PBA Commissioner’s Cup debut on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The reigning Philippine Cup champions looked anything but dominant against the in-form Bolts and not even the arrival of 2017 first overall pick Christian Standhardinger could spark the team.

“We’re not yet in game shape, which is very evident eh, and we have to adjust our approach in the game, especially if we’re up against a very game (Meralco),” said Austria, crediting Meralco for containing their big men.

“Our strength is with our big men eh, but they have (Arinza) Onuaku, who can control our big men, although June Mar (Fajardo) played really well, but that is not enough eh,” he added.

Standhardinger had a fairly quiet debut as he finished with just four points on 2-of-5 shooting to go along five rebounds, two assists and two steals in nearly 20 minutes of foul-plagued action off the bench.

But Austria isn’t worried about Standhardinger.

“Makikita naman ‘yung energy niya eh, he’s a big help to the team, this is his first game so, on his part, he’s also trying to adjust eh,” said Austria.

“Nasa adjustment period siya eh, he’s trying to figure out what is good para sa team namin, what kind of help he has to provide but definitely makikita niyo kung anong worth niya,” he said.

Despite the sluggish start to the conference, Austria is confident the Beermen can quickly bounce back.

“Yung kalaban namin nasa momentum na eh, this is their fourth game, this is our first game without any scrimmages against any other team, so it’s really hard. And we’re still trying to figure out what is really good for us,” said Austria.

“The good thing is this is only our first game, this is our first loss, and still have a lot of games to play, and I’m sure the next games, the next few games siguro, we’ll be able to get our rhythm.”
