Big blow for Meralco as it bids for Fiba Asia Champions Cup without Newsome, Hodge

MERALCO now has to make do without Chris Newsome and Cliff Hodge for its Fiba Asia Champions Cup campaign.

The two Fil-Ams were not officially listed as part of the Bolts’ 12-man lineup in time for their opening game against host team Mono Vampire on Thursday at the gym in Nonthaburi, Thailand.

The non-inclusion of the two obviously meant Newsome and Hodge were not given the green light by FIBA to play as locals in the meet featuring top ballclubs from around Asia.

The fate of the two were discussed during the managers’ meeting on Wednesday night where Meralco was represented by top official Paolo Trillo.

The amiable Bolts team manager has yet return messages SPIN.ph sent to him as of posting time.

Also listed as part of the Meralco roster is Diamond Louise Stone and not 7-foot-2 Liam McMorrow as earlier planned by the team.

McMorrow, 31, was supposed to be the frontcourt partner of two-time PBA Best Import Allen Durham.

The absence of Newsome and Hodge further decimated Meralco’s roster after arriving in the Thai province without veterans Ranidel de Ocampo and Jared Dillinger, both out with injuries.

After Mono Vampire, Meralco will next play Alvark of Japan on Friday before winding its preliminary round campaign in Group B against defending champion Al- Riyadi of Lebanon.

At the end of the group stage, the top two teams in each group will automatically advance to the semis.
