Blakely urges Romeo to keep shooting: ‘He’s one of the best players in the league’

IT took an assurance from import Marqus Blakely for Terrence Romeo to settle down and do what he does best – shoot the basketball.

With Blakely having his back, Romeo took care of business and hit for 25 points as TnT Katropa overcame a 23-point deficit to frustrate NorthPort, 104-102, Sunday night in the PBA Governors Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Romeo fired 6-of-9 from three-point range, the last two coming down the stretch that tied the game at 96-all and capped the Katropa’s long rally from being down, 37-60, in the second quarter.

The league’s four-time scoring champion had nine points in the fourth quarter as he connived with Blakely, who had 15 of his 23 points during that same stretch, in erasing a 12-point deficit in the final six minutes of the game.

Blakely later disclosed talking to Romeo not to mind anything other than shoot the ball.

“Terrence played a hell of a game,” said Blakely, a former Best Import. “(I told him) you’re one of the best players in the league, (so) don’t think of anything else but just shoot the ball.”

Romeo finished shooting 8-of-16 from the field and had eight of the team’s total 17 assists as he tried to fill in the void left by the injured Jayson Castro.

“He’s come a long way since he’s with that team, Globalport,” added Blakely.

The prolific scoring guard however, credited his teammates for the comeback win that stretched TnT’s winning run to three and improve at 4-4 overall.

At the same time, Romeo also said the drastic drop in his playing weight has slowly help him get back to his old form.

Romeo admitted losing at least 15 pounds in two weeks behind the strict, no-carb diet implemented by consultant Mark Dickel.

“Malaki ang binaba ng timbang ko ngayon, nag-take advantage ako nung long break namin para mag-lose ng weight,” he said.

But the buck doesn’t stop here for Romeo and the Katropa as they bid to get back on top after a slow start to their campaign in the season-ending meet.

“Nag improve na kami, pero dapat sa susunod, mas mag-improve pa kami. Sobrang madami pa kaming dapat matutunan,” he said.
