Chism: I’m here to help the team win

Wayne Chism refused to be considered an upgrade forafter playing making his debut for the Magnolia Hotshots Pambansang Manok in Wednesday’s rout of NLEX and his former coach Yeng Guiao at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Chism had 27 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two steals and three blocks in his first game for the Hotshots, who rolled to a 116-89 blowout against his former team and clinch a playoff berth in the quarterfinals.

The 31-year-old was the Hotshots fourth import this conference after Vernon Macklin, Curtis Kelly and Justin Jackson.

But Chism is more focused on regaining Magnolia’s confidence after a stretch of just one win in five games with Kelly and Jackson.

“I’m here to help the team win and build confidence with the team and help them get their confidence,” Chism said. “I can’t downtalk the other imports because they did a good job while they was here.

“It’s just, with the coaching staff, it didn’t work out. Other than that, I’m here to help the guys, not to take over anything from them or take anything from them.”

The win enabled Magnolia to forge a tie for sixth place with Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and GlobalPort at 5-5 as of Thursday.

Magnolia faces defending champion San Miguel on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, their first meeting since the Philippine Cup Finals.(JT)
