Consultant Dickel working with Ravena and co. to make playing fun again at TNT

TNT consultant Mark Dickel said the KaTropa have been finding ways to make playing basketball enjoyable again following changes to the coaching staff.

Dickel was hired by TNT to become the team’s consultant following an early slump in the PBA Governors’ Cup, and so far, the move has been paying dividends as the team has won two straight games following the change.

Dickel, a New Zealander who had coaching stints with the national squad of Albania, said the coaching staff have not made significant changes to the system, aside from trying to make playing basketball fun again for the players.

“Not too much structurally,” said Dickel, when asked by reporters what changes the staff did. “The previous coach did a good job. He is a good coach and we have really good players.”

“For me, it’s just a matter of me trying to get them to enjoy basketball again and find their love for the game again,” said Dickel, who was the coach of New Zealand’s local league squad Canterbury Rams before moving to TNT.

So far, the ploy seems to work as TNT is currently on a three-game winning streak following a 104-102 win over NorthPort on Sunday after coming back from a 23-point deficit to take the win.

Dickel said TNT coach Bong Ravena and the rest of the staff have been instrumental in implementing those changes to the players.

“That’s my focus on and to have other really good coaches helping me like coach Bong, coach Eric, it makes a big, big difference. We just tried to make them enjoyable for them and hopefully, that transfers to the court, and play a little bit better,” said Dickel.

Dickel hopes the trend will continue for TNT as the conference goes along.

“We have good talent on our team. It’s just that how can we play hard every game,” said Dickel.

Dickel said he is also impressed with the talent of the players in his first foray in the PBA.

“The other teams are really, really good. There are good players on every team and a lot of good players on every team. That’s a little bit of an adjustment to New Zealand. We have good players but not really that deep. There are so many veteran players who are smart and knows the game well. Just really learning a lot and seeing that no game is easy, every game is difficult,” said Dickel.
