Disgusted over crunchtime crumble, Alas urges Fuel Masters to show maturity

NOT even the arrival of Calvin Abueva could break the cold spell of Louie Alas against his former team as Phoenix bowed to Alaska in the PBA Governors’ Cup.

The Fuel Masters were pretty much in the game for the first three quarters only to lose steam in the end game against a balanced Aces’ side.

While Alas sees that as a positive, the fiery mentor also noted that they can’t be satisfied with moral victories.

“May nakita naman akong positive kasi nung first two games namin sa kanila, second quarter pa lang, decided na yung game. Here, until fourth quarter lumalaban kami,” said Alas after the match.

“Pero I told them moral victory isn’t enough kasi we’ve been together for almost one year na so dapat alam na natin anong dapat gawin,” he added.

Alas admitted that his squad wasn’t mature enough in this match against a battle-tested Alaska side that knows how to grind out wins.

It’s something that Alas believes they should work on.

“Partly, immaturity on our side. When the chips were down, medyo nagpipilit kami, parang nawala na yung wisyo namin,” Alas said.

“Immaturity talaga kasi di naman pwedeng palagi kang lamang. You have to know how to play when you’re catching up. E fourth quarter, alam niyo bang nalamangan pa kami nung wala yung import nila? Siguro, nanggigil, gusto agad lahat na pumunta kay Eugene para atakihin. Nawala kami sa wisyo. Naubos nga yung timeout ko e,” he added.

The focus now shifts towards the struggling TNT as Phoenix looks to head into their 19-day break on a high note. It’s not going to be easy, granted that they only have a day to prepare for Terrence Romeo and company, but at least they’ll get a chance to bounce back quickly.

“The more important thing here is we’re up against TNT on Friday, kelangan maka-bounce back kami as soon as possible because 19 days yung off namin e. Sabi ko nga, we all know na pagod tayo, pero things beyond our control. We just have to bounce back, as simple as that.”
