Is Chris Tiu planning to retire at end of the season?

MERALCO coach Norman Black is no longer surprised with the resurgence of Chris Tiu at Rain or Shine.

Black said it’s hard not to notice Tiu’s resurgence which he said is one of the reasons why Rain or Shine has secured the top spot in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup playoffs.

Black said he has heard that Tiu might retire at the end of the season, adding his former star guard at Ateneo is playing like someone who’s out to leave a lasting legacy before calling in a career.

“He seems to be playing really relaxed now. I’ve heard he might retire at the end of the year. Maybe that’s the reason. I don’t know why,” Black, who won a championship with Tiu in the UAAP back in 2008, said.

The seventh pick overall in the 2012 PBA draft has hinted of retirement as early as three years ago, but has since shelved those plans to sign an extension with the Elasto Painters.

The departure of former teammates like Paul Lee has seen Tiu take on a leadership role this season and there is no doubt he’s playing the best basketball of his pro career.

On Sunday, Tiu continued his stellar play, finishing with 13 points, four rebounds, and five assists in Rain or Shine’s 106-99 win over Meralco.

Whether retirement is imminent or not, Black said Tiu’s stellar play is no longer a surprise.

“He seems to be really relaxed the way he is playing. He has always been a good player. I think they probably moved some of the players that were playing his position in the past couple of years.

“He’s got the opportunity to play more minutes this conference so he has really performed well,” said Black.
