Nash Racela on leave, Eric Gonzales to call shots for TNT against Columbian, according to source

THE weight of TnT Katropa’s two straight blowout losses in the PBA Governors Cup may had been too much to bear for Nash Racela.

The TnT coach is currently on an indefinite leave and won’t be calling the shots in its game against Columbian Dyip on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, according to sources.

Long-time Racela associate Eric Gonzales will be the one handling the Katropa (1-4), who are on a three-game slide and lost the last two games against Alaska and Phoenix by an average margin of 29 points.

Calls and text messages made to TnT team manager Virgil Villavicencio have not been returned at posting time.

It is uncertain, however, how long Racela will be out.

The 1-4 record to start a conference is the worst for the TnT franchise since the 1999 Commissioner’s Cup when the franchise was still carrying the Mobiline brand, according to league chief statistician Fidel Mangonon III.

Racela reportedly didn’t show up in team practice on Saturday, just less than 24 hours after its 112-82 rout at the hands of the Fuel Masters.

The soft-spoken coach took over TnT over a season ago and led the team to a runner-up finish behind San Miguel in the Commissioner’s Cup finals last year.

Racela came on board TnT as a member of Chot Reyes’ coaching staff in 2007.

TnT is also contemplating on replacing import Stacy Davis as the team has yet to win a game with him.

The Katropa’s lone win registered at the expense of Meralco, 92-90, saw the team play with an all-Filipino roster.
