NLEX gives Guiao rousing welcome by dealing Blackwater first loss

NLEX gave head coach Yeng Guiao a rousing welcome on Wednesday night, handing Blackwater its first loss in the 2018 PBA Governors Cup, 124-106, on Wednesday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Larry Fonacier came up big for NLEX, scoring 24 points to lift the Road Warriors to their fourth win in six outings at the expense of the league leaders in Guiao’s first game with the team since his stint with the national team.

After a hot start, Blackwater, which played without the ailing Poy Erram, dropped to 4-1, leaving Phoenix (5-1) at the top of the standings.

“Matagal tagal kaming naghanda nung nakita namin na this team is really for real so we made sure that we were prepared for this game,” said Guiao, who now holds the national coaching job.

Fonacier hit six of his eight three-point attempts to post his best scoring output in an NLEX uniform, according to PBA statistics chief Fidel Mangonon.

Aaron Fuller had 24 points and 20 rebounds for NLEX, which held Blackwater import Henry Walker to 16 points.

“The plan was to sacrifice Walker’s scoring. The keys to winning for Blackwater is the locals combining with Walker on offense and four to five guys in double figures. I figured we have to pick our poison. It was decided that Walker can go one-on-one but prevent him from setting up his teammates,” said Guiao.

Roi Sumang had 24 points while Paul Zamar added 16 points for Blackwater.

The scores:

NLEX 124 – Fonacier 24, Fuller 24, Ighalo 18, Miranda 9, Paniamogan 9, Galanza 8, Quinahan 8, Tiongson 6, Baguio 6, Rios 4, Soyud 4, Monfort 3, Taulava 1, Tallo 0.
