San Miguel gets back on track with runaway win over Columbian

SAN Miguel turned on the switch in the third quarter to drop the hammer on Columbian Dyip, 143-119, and get back on track in the PBA Governors Cup on Friday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Import AZ Reid erupted for 14 points and Marcio Lassiter had eight during that stretch when the Beermen went on a 13-2 tear to rip the game apart, 101-82.

In all, San Miguel outscored Columbian, 43-18, during the third period.

“That’s the turning point of the game,” said San Miguel coach Leo Austria after his team improved to 2-1 (win-loss) in the season-ending conference.

Indeed, it was.

The Beermen also dominated the second half, 79-54, on the way to registering the most number of points in a game (143) in the last seven years since TnT Katropa defeated Air21, 145-116, in the 2011 Governors Cup.

San Miguel fired 13 three-pointers in the last two quarters to finish with 23, matching the league’s all-time record set twice by TnT – the last in a 129-110 win over the Beermen themselves in the 2009 Philippine Cup.

Although happy with the win, Austria wasn’t pleased with the team’s defense especially in the first half when it allowed the Dyip to score 66 points to take a two-point lead at the break.

“That’s not a sigh of a good defense,” said the champion mentor. “Fortunately, our offense was super tonight. I’m happy we won the game, but I’m sad because we’re not playing good defense.”

Arwind Santos topscored for the Beermen with 29 points, including an explosive first quarter in which he poured in 19 big points. He went 7-of-13 from three-point range.

Lassiter meanwhile, was 6-of-12 from the same spot for 28 points, while rookie Christian Standhardinger had 21 and nine rebounds.

Import AZ Reid atoned for a bad start by firing 14 of his 16 points during the Beermen’s third-quarter breakaway. He completed a triple-double with 17 rebounds and 11 assists.

The Dyip also had three players with 20 points or more, but couldn’t sustain their first half run to suffer their sixth straight loss.

Jackson Corpuz led Columbian in scoring with 28 points. Import Akeem Wright and Jeremy King each had 22 points and combined for 26 rebounds and 14 assists for the Dyip.

The scores:

San Miguel (143) – Santos 29, Lassiter 28, Standhardinger 21, Reid 16, Nabong 14, Cabagnot 12, Pessumal 11, Ross 7, Heruela 5, Mamaril 0, Vigil 0.
