Super-sub Justin Chua joins fray as Phoenix sustains hot start

ADD Justin Chua to the host of Phoenix players stepping up in a dream start for the team in the PBA Governors’ Cup.

Chua finished with 12 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks in the Fuel Masters’ 95-82 win over Magnolia on Sunday, stepping up after Rookie of the Year candidate Jason Perkins got into foul trouble.

“I was ready lang,” said Chua, who was averaging 7.2 points and 4.6 rebounds prior to the game. “Na-accept ko na kasi ‘yung role ko dito na reliever of (import) Eugene (Phelps). ‘Yun lang, minalas na foul trouble si Perk so nadagdagan ‘yung minutes ko.

“I stayed ready and played my game.”

With the former Ateneo back-up stepping up, Phoenix picked up its third straight win to climb to second spot with a 5-1 win-loss record, their best start in franchise history

“I think, finally, the team is getting together,” Chua said. “Parang ‘yung game plan ni coach, nandoon na, nasusunod na. Nung umpisa, nagkakapaan pa. At least ngayon, nandiyan na. na-gegets na namin.”

Following the win over Magnolia, Chua is hoping Phoenix can sustain the momentum in a game over Barangay Ginebra on Saturday in Cagayan de Oro City.

“We will probably take it one game at a time. Dito nagsimula sa Magnolia. Tough game din ito. Hopefully, tuluy tuloy ‘yung momentum namin,” said Chua.
