Jeric Fortuna makes comeback as NorthPort shores up depleted backcourt

ONE of Pido Jarencio’s ‘favorite sons’ is making a comeback with NorthPort Batang Pier. Jeric Fortuna has joined the team in practice and could be activated in time for its PBA Governors Cup game against Magnolia Pambansang Manok on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The absence of star player Stanley Pringle and the various injuries that decimated the team’s backcourt roster had the Batang Pier seeking help elsewhere. Good thing, the 26-year-old Fortuna is ready to take on the job despite recently pursuing his dream to become a pilot....

GlobalPort looks to finish off Rain or Shine in do-or-die match

GlobalPort had a mountain to climb at the start of the playoffs versus elims top finisher Rain or Shine. The Batang Pier has scaled half of the ascent, and now try to reach the summit as they face off with the Elasto Painters in a do-or-die duel in their PBA Commissioner’s Cup quarterfinals matchup at the MOA Arena in Pasay City Thursday. Coach Pido Jarencio and his troops seek to become only the fourth team in PBA playoffs to topple the No. 1 seed in the quarterfinals as they tangle with the E-Painters at 7 p.m. Behind a lethal trey by...

Arana still considers himself lucky after scary fall

RYAN Arana is hoping for the best after a scary fall in GlobalPort’s 114-113 win over Rain or Shine in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Arana collided in mid-air with Chris Tiu and landed badly on his back and immediately received treatment from his team doctors. The veteran guard out of La Salle went out with 35 seconds left in the second quarter and never returned to the game, though he watched the match from the bench. The 6-2 lefty is now under observation but remains questionable for the...

JONATHAN Grey hit a corner three with 11.5 seconds left as GlobalPort stunned top-seed Rain or Shine, 114-113, on Tuesday in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup quarterfinals at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum. Grey’s triple completed the Batang Pier’s comeback from 16 points down and enabled the eighth-seeded team to drag the twice-to-beat Elasto Painters into a do-or-die match for a place in the semifinals on Thursday. Maverick Ahanmisi missed three of four free throws in the endgame, leaving the door ajar for GlobalPort to steal the shock win and deal...

Pido Jarencio throws new boys Taha, Espinas in at the deep end – and likes what he saw

THE arrival of Gabby Espinas and Paolo Taha at the GlobalPort camp isn’t considered a future-altering event. But Pido Jarencio begs to differ. “Si Paolo Taha, ‘yung konting kumpiyansa darating ‘yan. And then si Gabby Espinas naman, masyadong matalinong maglaro kasi beterano na,” Jarencio said after a 133-115 rout of Columbian in the two’s first game with the Batang Pier on Friday. With only one practice under their belt, Espinas and Taha were both immediately thrown in at the deep end by Jarencio, playing 19 and 24...

Pringle says he didn’t care about getting 50, but was prodded by coach to go for it

STANLEY Pringle would rather win a game than set a personal scoring milestone. But 50 points is still 50 points. The Globalport guard admitted he didn’t set out to post a scoring record on Friday night when he became the first local player to reach the 50-point plateau in 14 seasons while leading Globalport to a 135-108 rout of Columbian Dyip in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The 31-year-old Pringle scored in double figures in each of the four quarters on the way to the new season-high mark that also stands as...

Unstoppable Stanley Pringle explodes for 50 points in GlobalPort rout of Columbian

TAKING the cue from the damp weather outside, Stanley Pringle made it rain inside Smart Araneta Coliseum on Friday. The Fil-Am slasher unleashed a jaw-dropping 50-point explosion in GlobalPort’s 133-115 victory that all but eliminated Columbian Dyip from the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup playoff race. Pringle’s scorching offensive display saw him reach a new career-high in scoring on a 9-of-16 shooting from threes and an eye-popping 60-percent clip from the field, fittingly capped off by a slam with 50.9 seconds left to play. His blazing...

For leading Globalport past heavy favorite SMB, Stanley Pringle earns PBA Player of the Week honors

Fil-American guard Stanley Pringle chalked up his first Cignal-PBA Press Corps Player of the Week award following his scintillating performance in GlobalPort’s king-sized upset of defending champion San Miguel Beer. The guard out of Penn State had an all-around performance with 22 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals, leading the Batang Pier to victory over the Beermen last week. Malcolm White endures back spasm, powers GlobalPort past NLEX

GlobalPort made a quick turnaround from a loss to Magnolia the last time out, clicking on both ends in smothering NLEX, 116-94, in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Wednesday night. The Batang Pier rebounded strong from their 87-92 defeat at the hands of the Hotshots and went above the .500 mark once again with three wins against two losses. “We played good basketball. Ang taas ng shooting percentage namin and at the same time, we defended well. Dumepensa kami ng maganda, at sumunod na ang opensa...
