Magnolia coach says Hotshots will bounce back in the season-ending Governors’ Cup

The series of import changes has apparently took its toll on the Magnolia Hotshots Pambansang Manok, in the process ending Chito Victolero’s streak of semi-final appearances since he was named the team’s coach last season. Magnolia had made it to the semis four straight times under Victolero until that streak came to an end Tuesday night with an 89-78 loss to Alaska in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup quarterfinals at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. “Malaking factor yung hindi kami maka-settle down sa import,” Victolero...

Magnolia nips SMB, but falls short of best-of-three series spot

MAGNOLIA defeated San Miguel, 101-97, on Saturday at the close of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup elimination round at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum. The Hotshots improved their record to 6-5, but the win was not enough to get them to a higher seed as they failed to meet the required winning margin that would have given them the sixth seed in the quarterfinals. Magnolia needed a winning margin of 14 points or more in order to get the sixth seed. Instead, Magnolia dropped to No. 7, with the Hotshots needing to win twice over second seed Alaska in the...

Soon-to-be dad Paul Lee playing extra motivated for Magnolia

IT’S not surprising Paul Lee has been playing doubly inspired these days. The Magnolia Pambansang Manok guard is soon to be a father as wife Ruby is due to give birth by October to a baby girl. Lee said the welcome addition to the family is what makes him more motivated to play for the Hotshots as they began their PBA Commissioner’s Cup playoffs campaign by next week. “Kaya nga ito yung kinuha mong propesyon kasi yung basketball ang nagpapa-inspire sa iyo. Every time na tumapak ka sa court para maglaro automatic na yun,” said Lee. “Pero...

Ian Sangalang returns – and so has Magnolia’s deadly form

TIMING is everything. And for Ian Sangalang, it might just exactly what Magnolia needs as it makes a late push to the playoffs of the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup. Making his comeback from an injured right wrist incurred last May, the Kapampangan slotman is happy to see the Hotshots slowly coming together when it matters the most. “Sakto ito,” he remarked. “Sakto ito na nakukumpleto kami kahit unti-unti at nakuha namin yung gusto namin na import na si Wayne (Chism). Yung confidence namin sa team at sa isa’t isa, nabu-build up na namin.” In his...

Chism: I’m here to help the team win

Wayne Chism refused to be considered an upgrade forafter playing making his debut for the Magnolia Hotshots Pambansang Manok in Wednesday’s rout of NLEX and his former coach Yeng Guiao at the Mall of Asia Arena. Chism had 27 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two steals and three blocks in his first game for the Hotshots, who rolled to a 116-89 blowout against his former team and clinch a playoff berth in the quarterfinals. The 31-year-old was the Hotshots fourth import this conference after Vernon Macklin, Curtis Kelly and Justin...

Chism brings a lot of positives to table for Magnolia, says Lee

PAUL Lee is excited to team up once again with Wayne Chism, this time at Magnolia. “Of course, I’m very happy na nabigyan kami ulit ng chance na maging mag-teammates,” he said after Chism was brought in to rescue the Hotshots’ dimming chances in the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup. Sitting at eighth place with a 4-5 card, Magnolia takes a gamble with Chism who will be the team’s fourth reinforcement in the conference. But Lee feels Chism is worth the gamble. Chism is no stranger to the style of play in the PBA, having stints in the past with Rain...

Here’s why signing rights to Chism changed hands from NLEX to Blackwater to Magnolia

IT went down to a choice between Henry Walker and Wayne Chism. Blackwater opted for the tried and tested. Before Chism ended up with Magnolia, the Elite held the signing rights to the former Rain or Shine import but decided to go with a familiar face in Walker as replacement for Jarrid Famous in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup. So how come the rights to Chism, adjudged Best Import of this same conference in 2015 while still with Rain or Shine, ended up with Blackwater after last playing for NLEX a season ago? NLEX executive Ronald Dulatre...

Justin Jackson plays down highlight dunks for Magnolia as Ginebra has last laugh

JUSTIN Jackson provided the highlight plays for Magnolia with his high-flying dunks on Sunday against Barangay Ginebra. In his third game with the Hotshots, Jackson had 21 points and 15 rebounds coupled with slams over Ginebra’s twin towers Greg Slaughter and Japeth Aguilar. But Jackson was not impressed as the Hotshots suffered a 104-84 beating at the hands of their corporate rivals. “It was cool,” said Jackson. “It was a good match-up. I want to get the win. I won the match-up but I lost the game.” With Jackson at the helm, the Hotshots...

Justin Jackson eager to step up for Magnolia without Sangalang, Pingris

JUSTIN Jackson stayed true to his promise to play better after a so-so debut, leading Magnolia to a 111-89 victory over TNT in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Wednesday. Jackson finished with 18 points, 19 rebounds, seven assists, and two blocks, but more so than his numbers, it’s his energy and hustle which turned out to be his best contribution in the win. This couldn’t be anymore characterized in one defensive play in the four minute mark of the third quarter, when he sent Jayson Castro’s ball flying to the sidelines before saving the ball...

Victolero says lack of a post threat hurting Hotshots in Sangalang, Pingris absence

MAGNOLIA head coach Chito Victolero admits the absence of a legit post threat is hurting the Hotshots midway through the PBA Commissioner’s Cup. Already without leader Marc Pingris, the Hotshots suffered another blow when they lost former NCAA MVP Ian Sangalang to a wrist injury after four games this conference. Sangalang, who averages 13 points and 5.5 rebounds this conference, injured his right wrist in their 81-79 win over Meralco last May 18 and is not expected to return until a few more weeks. The Hotshots have lost their three...
