Castro carries TNT amid Tyler, Romeo struggles, deals Ginebra second straight loss

TNT rode the hot hands of Jayson Castro as it remained unbeaten in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup as it outlasted Ginebra 96-92 on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena. Castro played like import as the speedy guard finished with 27 points, five assists and three steals to make up for the struggles of backcourt pal Terrence Romeo and import Jeremy Tyler. Romeo finished with three points on 1-of-9 shooting while Tyler missed all of his five shots and finished with two points. “I think at this point, the nice thing about having depth in the guard...

Familiarity breeds contempt for rival imports Jeremy Tyler, Charles Garcia

TNT import Jeremy Tyler played down his confrontation with Ginebra reinforcement Charles Garcia late in their 96-92 win on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena. The two hulking imports were physical against each other and were captured by the cameras jawing at each other near the end of the match. While Garcia refused to comment on their ‘beef,’ Tyler gave a little a bit of context to the exchange. “In the course of the game, all athletes get tired and the first thing that goes away when you’re tired is your mind, your mindset,” explained Tyler....

Terrence Romeo blows hot and cold as TNT rips GlobalPort in ill-tempered affair

OFFENSE was abundant for TNT KaTropa as it outdueled GlobalPort, 128-114, in an ill-tempered affair on Sunday night for a solid start to its PBA Commissioner’s Cup campaign. With new recruit Terrence Romeo becoming another option, seven players scored in double figures for the Texters as they started strong and finished even better. Jayson Castro provided a spark off the bench with a team-high 21 points and 10 assists while Romeo added 11 markers in his debut – and against his former team – in a game that saw tempers flare throughout. “It’s...

Romeo left perplexed by dribbling violations: ‘Ewan ko ‘sang planeta siya nag-referee before’

TERRENCE Romeo lamented the dribbling violations called against him that factored in his so-so debut for TNT KaTropa in a 128-114 win over GlobalPort in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Sunday night. The new Texters recruit was called for double dribble in three straight possessions late in the fourth quarter, prompting him to have a word with the referees during and after the game. He was still seeking answers long after the match. “Siguro may nakikita yung referee na talagang nakikita niya siguro yung sa galing ibang planeta eh,” Romeo said....

THE good news for TNT KaTropa is the team has another explosive scorer in Terrence Romeo. The bad news: the Texers have another Gilas Pilipinas standout who can be called up for national duty anytime. Add Romeo to the list of TNT’s national players alongside Jayson Castro, Roger Pogoy, and Troy Rosario, raising the possibility that the Texters will be without four players come the third window of the Fiba World Cup qualifiers starting late June. Texters coach Nash Racela said he has no choice but to heed to the national call and release his...

Antonio Campbell flaunts all-around game as Alaska spoils Romeo’s first TNT outing

ALASKA spoiled Terrence Romeo’s first outing with TNT Katropa as the Aces pounced on a shorthanded Katropa, 106-97, in a tune-up game on Wednesday at the Hoops Center. Antonio Campbell showed flashes of his inside-outside game as he led the Aces with 29 points, while Calvin Abueva added 12 markers as The Beast provided his usual energy on both ends. Romeo, playing his first game in a TNT uniform since being traded from GlobalPort, looked sluggish as he was reduced into a facilitator, but still finished with 12 points. “It’s our...

Castro makes transition from student of Alapag to mentor to new boy Romeo

THE student has become the teacher. Jayson Castro has found himself in a mentor role as he forms the PBA’s most explosive backcourt combination with Terrence Romeo for TNT KaTropa starting in the Commissioner’s Cup that unfolds on April 22. The 31-year-old Castro is embracing his leadership role that former backcourt partner Jimmy Alapag once played with the ‘The Blur’ as his protégé. “Parang ako na ‘yung Jimmy Alapag,” Castro said with a smile after the Texters’ tune-up game against Alaska on Wednesday. “Syempre yung...

After figuring in yet another trade, Yousef Taha relishes ‘new environment’ at TNT

YOUSEF Taha insisted he doesn’t have to fill the void left by Mo Tautuaa, saying he’s focusing on his strengths to help TNT KaTropa get over the hump in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup after failing short in the last edition. Tautaa was tagged as the future of the franchise after being taken with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 PBA draft, but his slow progress left him dispensable as he was packaged in a deal for Terrence Romeo two weeks ago. Taha is expected to fill the gap left by Tautuaa, but the 6-foot-7 joyrneyman stressed he just...

TNT import Jeremy Tyler to shoulder bigger load as injured Kelly Williams sits out

WHILE it now has an abundance of players in its backcourt, TNT KaTropa has a shortage in its frontcourt at the start of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup. The Texters, who have added Terrence Romeo to its guard rotation, will open their campaign on April 22 against GlobalPort without Kelly Williams, who is recovering from an undisclosed injury in his upper body. The TNT star slotman has been sidelined since the Texters resumed training camp and is out for four more weeks, meaning he will miss the first few games of the midseason tournament. “Hindi...

Terrence Romeo promises to be a good soldier to ‘reasonable, professional’ Racela

TERRENCE Romeo vowed to be a good soldier to Nash Racela as player and coach reunite at TNT KaTropa starting in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup. The flamboyant Romeo’s stay with GlobalPort was marred by a run-in with coach Pido Jarencio that appeared to be the last straw that led to his trade to the Texters. Now, Romeo will be playing under Racela, who handled the former UAAP MVP in the latter part of his college career at Far Eastern University. Romeo admitted he would occasionally bend minor house rules of Racela during their time at FEU, but...
