Vic Manuel out to stay healthy as he rides wave of good form

IN the midst of a conference marred by unfortunate off-court issues for Alaska, it’s the brilliance of Vic Manuel which keeps the hopes of the Aces going.

And as his streak of scoring 20 points or more stretches to 11, so does the Aces’ success in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

Manuel was at the forefront of Alaska’s attack as it became the first team to book a ticket to the semifinals in the season’s middle conference following their 89-78 win over Magnolia on Tuesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Manuel scored a game-high 22 points in just a shade under 25 minutes off the bench, one of the few players who had it going offensively in an otherwise defensive game.

For Manuel, he was just glad to be of service for the Aces.

“Every game, talagang ready lang ako eh. Nagka-problema nga kami sa nawala yung dalawang scorers namin. Talagang kino-continue ko lang yung mga ginagawa ko para ma-maintain ko yung laro ko,” said Manuel, referring to Calvin Abueva who’s still indefinitely suspended for personal issues and Jeron Teng who sat out a chunk of the conference after being involved in a stabbing incident.

“Siguro, kelangang alagaan ko lang yung sarili ko. Yun talaga naging problema ko sa mga nakaraang conference e kasi yung injury. Siguro, mas maging healthy ako, mas malaking bagay sa akin,” he added.

To no one’s surprise, Manuel is the leading candidate for the Best Player of the Conference award but what makes Manuel happy is that they’ve finally broken their semis drought.

The Aces hadn’t made the semifinals since the Commissioner’s Cup of 2016 and the Muscle Man is just thankful that his performance has resulted into a winning conference for the Aces.

“Siyempre, masaya kasi after dalawang taon ata, di kami naka-semis. Sobrang saya kasi nakabalik na kami ngayon. Continue ko pa rin, continue ko pa rin. Dapat, every game, yung ginagawa ko, ma-continue ko, ma-maintain ko,” Manuel said.
